What happens after you click Source Candidates

"I just need 200 names. I'll figure out the rest."

Sourcing feels like a volume problem, so people shop for volume.

But the names are the easy part. The hard part is the next hour: which ones you read first, which ones you pay to contact, and what happens to the list as you work through it.

So here's the mechanical walk-through of what SquarePeg does after you click Source Candidates on a job. Including the parts it doesn't do.

Where do sourced candidates come from?

Sourcing searches an external talent database for people who aren't in your applicant pool or your ATS.

It uses the scoring criteria you've already set for the job, so there's one prerequisite: set the criteria first.

You start it from the Sourced tab on a job. Sourcing runs only when you click Source Candidates. Nothing happens in the background until you do.

Each search returns up to 50 candidates by default.

How are they ranked?

By the same model that scores your applicants. Sourced candidates land in the same candidate list, ranked, with the reason for each score shown criterion by criterion.

So you're not reading a pile of names. You're reading a ranked list where you can see why the third person sits above the fourth, and disagree.

Three markers keep them distinguishable from everyone else:

Sourced candidates also have to meet the job's eligibility rules. The same deal-breakers you set for applicants apply here.

What happens as you work the list?

You can do two things with a sourced candidate: mark them as Interested, or remove them.

What the list does next depends on one setting.

The list size runs from 25 to 200. You set it, along with continuous sourcing, from the gear icon on the job, or set defaults for new jobs on the Settings page. (The setting is shared with rediscovery.)

Raising the list size adds more sourced candidates, and uses credits for them. Lowering it doesn't remove anyone.

Where do the credits go?

Three credits for each fully sourced candidate: one to find them, two to reveal their email address.

The split matters, because you only need the second part for people you plan to email.

Imagine you're hiring 3 SDRs and you keep the default list of 50:

→ Finding all 50: 50 credits
→ You read in ranked order and mark 10 as Interested
→ You reveal emails for the 6 you actually want to contact: 12 credits
→ Total: 62 credits

Reveal all 50 up front and the same list costs 150.

(That's a hypothetical, using the credit costs above. Your numbers will differ.)

Marking someone Interested doesn't reveal anything or use reveal credits. If you already know you want to email them, there's a one-step option: Mark as Interested and Reveal Email.

What does "Interested" actually do?

It tracks who you want to reach. That's all.

It doesn't contact the candidate. SquarePeg sends no outreach email to candidates. Once you've revealed an address, you copy it and reach out yourself, from whatever you already use.

What happens when you change your criteria?

Sourced candidates are scored separately from applicants and rediscovered candidates.

After you edit the criteria, open the Sourced tab and click Source Candidates again. Everyone already on the list gets rescored against the current criteria: including people you marked Interested, removed, or revealed. Applicants and rediscovered candidates aren't touched.

If you see a clock icon and gray scores on the Sourced tab, those candidates were scored against your previous criteria.

How do you narrow a big list?

Sourced candidates can be filtered by location, criteria, meets required, authenticity, favorites, score, source, interested, removed, and email revealed.

A 200-person list is a lot to scroll. "Meets required, sorted by score, no email revealed yet" is a lot less.

What it doesn't do

The limits are worth knowing up front.

Getting 200 names is a purchase. Working a list you can trust is the job.
